Book out now!

So yes, it’s been a long time coming and a lot of hard work, but finally it is out. ‘Woodmen and Fenmen: Blackfen’s Story’ is a history of Blackfen from its beginnings as a hamlet in the woods, later surrounded by farmland, to its development as a residential and commercial district. Historical documents and reminiscences from past and present residents have been used to tell a story of enterprising and strong-willed individuals who have helped to build this community.

Archaeology in Blackfen

As far as I know archaeology has never been attempted in Blackfen. So I thought I would have a go and see what would happen!

I made a start on the garden of the house where I grew up. I have already done some research on it. It was built in the 1930s, on land which was farmland, and before that, woodland. What could possibly be found there? Perhaps there might be some animal bones, or objects dropped by farm labourers, or perhaps even a neolithic stone tool!

Here is the test pit:

Despite digging to a depth of one metre (in solid clay!) my finds were only 20th century ones.

Finds... all 20th century!

Oval fair 2011

The Oval Traders’ Summer Fair was held on Saturday 11 June 2011 at The Oval, Sidcup.

There were children’s rides, games and activities, a dog show, live music, tombola, plant stall, face-painting, portrait-painting and much more. I was also on a stall with a display of local history.

Held in aid of the Greenwich and Bexley Community Hospice, it was packed with people and was a great success.

Library display 2010

My display at Blackfen Library from 2 October to 6 November 2010, showing a selection of images from Blackfen’s Past and Present, was a great success. Many people showed an interest and got in touch with me about all aspects of Blackfen.

On 5 November, people were invited to come along to talk to me about Blackfen. It went very well and I was astounded at the number of people who turned up with interesting photographs, fascinating stories and snippets of information which would otherwise go unrecorded.

A big thank you to everyone who contributed.
